Best Mascaras in the Game

Mascaras are one of my most favorite cosmetics to shop for! First of,  the options are limitless, the packaging is fun and if you are a makeup addict like myself, you will always be looking for the next best thing to drop on the market. I wouldn’t even be able to estimate how many mascara’s I have been through since the ripe age of 12! However, they were all volumizing, so at least I have a niche. I have sampled, bought, bought then exchanged (God Bless Sephora!) numerous mascaras and through these trials and tribulations I present to you a list of my top brand name mascaras that are worth dropping $30+ on.

Personally, my lashes are long on their own, but they are not full, hence my constant obsession with building volume. Also, and this is just a disclaimer, I never purchase waterproof makeup, so there will be no waterproof mascaras on this list. My personal opinion is that we tug at our skin as is, whether during application or removal of makeup. No need to pull extra as you are trying to remove that stubborn waterproof effect.

So without further ado, here are my choices of brand name mascaras that do the job and do it well.

Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara – $16.50

Clinique was my “foot in the door” for brand name makeup. I remember getting a small gift set of various Clinique products and feeling oh so fancy! My skin is not a big fan of Clinique items, but makeup – I can tolerate. Anyhow, Clinique Lash Doubling mascara is on my list for one simple reason! It does exactly what it promises to do and that is to thicken your lashes for maximum volume. Don’t over apply it though, or it will get clumpy! I like it because it is a simple formula, without any additional knick knacks or dramatics. If you want volume, then look no further. This mascara is great for day time and the price is pretty attractive too. Use it in combination with Clinique Lash Building Primer for a more dramatic look.

DIORSHOW – $27.50

I was lucky enough to get a sample way back in the day via my Sephora insider points. That was my introduction to DIORSHOW. Can’t say I am complaining :). This mascara promises fuller and longer lashes, comes in four shades (this season they added in a purple hue) and this year it is a reformulated recipe with added conditioning for lashes to provide for an extension effect. So you will be killing two birds with one stone – longer and fuller lashes – who can resist? This mascara promises buildable volume and introduces a new air lock wiping system, which keeps your mascara fresh longer. The brush is dense, which in my book is great for building volume or for naturally full lashes, but not awesome for clumps! Since my lashes are not as full, this usually leaves me with spider eyes if I am not careful. I like to apply my DIORSHOW after I have curled my lashes with an eyelash curler, and usually on the ends only. If I start pulling this product through the entire length of my lashes, then  – Hello Clumps! So I try to use it sparingly and very, very carefully. I do like the two in one bonus, so if you are looking for a mascara to elongate and maximize – DIORSHOW is for you.

Chanel Le Volume de Chanel – $32

Love this one! It reminds me very much of YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils, but it is slightly different. It is a light formula that builds volume and color with each stroke, and I am all about building volume instead of having it land on your lashes in one single application. The color of this mascara is another reason to rave about it. I have it in Noir, and it is one of the darkest blacks I have ever came across in mascara world. However, it comes in four other shades should you wish to get adventurous. The brush is made of short and long bristles, or as they call it – “The Snowflake Brush”, which makes the brush less dense, thus resulting in less clumps or any clumps at all. I use this mascara for day and night looks and adjust my application accordingly.

BareMinerals Lash Domination – $18

Woof! This one took me a while to get used to. Lash domination for sure! This mascara is very heavy on application, so apply wisely! For me this is a nighttime look mascara only, as it looks very heavy during the day – at least for me and my lashes. However, if you are looking for a dramatic look then look no further. This mascara applies thick and heavy, it can get clumpy if you over do it and is a mess to take off.  BUT you will get all of the volume that you dream of and more. So for that reason alone I had to include it on my list!

YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils – $32

This was my latest purchase and by far my most favorite! I am absolutely obsessed with this one and not just for one reason alone. The formula promises to give you a dramatic, false lash effect with a single stroke, comes in six shades, and is infused with a B5 pro-vitamin for strength and protection. Add the fact that it comes in a shiny, fancy and elegant bottle and I am sold! However, the real reasons why I love this product are far from the promised effects. I was tipped off to this mascara by a friend, then I read about it on a beauty blog and then I went to Sephora to see for myself what the hype was all about. I bought it on the spot and here is why.

This mascara is actually quite light on application, so no, you do not get a dramatic look with just one stroke. You have to work for it, but that is exactly why I love it! I like to be in control of my makeup, and I find it rather annoying when no matter how you apply your mascara it either gets clumpy or applies heavy. Not this baby! It will be light, not at all clumpy and you can keep applying until you get to the desired look! Did I mention that this mascara does not get clumpy at all? No matter how many strokes you apply? Well hear it again – no clumps!

With just one stroke, however, you will see the difference, but it will be a natural, subtle look. So this mascara is perfect for daytime and nighttime. Brownie points – comes off easily with just warm water, without leaving the nasty “racoon eyes” effect! LOVE IT!
